Chicago Metro History Fair

The Chicago Metro History Fair is an academic program that gives students the opportunity to develop their own historical content by creating projects that answer their own questions and present their own arguments based on their research using secondary and primary sources.

The goals of History Fair are to spark the love of history and build important skills that prepare students for college, careers, and civic life. These goals are realized through three core activities:

• Organizing and administering the Chicago Metro History Fair academic competition for students in grades 6 through 12
• Developing history curricula and educational materials
• Conducting professional development workshops for history and social science teachers

The History Fair program meets most state goals for language arts and the social sciences and applies to many other educational goals as well.

Founded in 1977 as an independent, nonprofit educational organization, the Chicago Metro History Fair (formerly called the Chicago Metro History Education Center) serves students, teachers, and schools in the city of Chicago and suburban Cook, DuPage, Lake, and Kane Counties. In 2016, the organization became a new department of the Chicago History Museum. We are grateful to the Newberry Library, Chicago Public Library, and University of Illinois at Chicago, who have supported this program for almost forty years.
