Day of Remembrance

Chicago’s Japanese American community invites you to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Executive Order 9066, which authorized the forced relocation of 120,000 ethnic Japanese into incarceration camps scattered throughout the US.

This year’s program features screenings of two short films: The Orange Story (2016) depicts the journey of an elderly shopkeeper as he complies with Executive Order 9066, using archival sources to complement the narrative and provide historical context. Under the Sun and Stars of Solidarity (2015) reveals how discrimination continued even after death—people with Japanese names, including veterans, were refused burial plots in all Chicago cemeteries except one: Montrose Cemetery.
